The following was recovered from the estate of Dr. Elias Thorne, found in a sealed envelope bearing the ThAERIS internal mail stamp, dated June 2, 2026. The envelope was discovered in a filing cabinet previously catalogued as empty. This is not unusual.
The 3:14 Anomaly
At 03:14:15 this morning, the Nevada facility registered a coherence event that should not have been possible. The signal was brief — 3.2 seconds, exactly — but it was not brief enough. It left a mark.
The temporal anchor installed in Sector 7 has been running continuously since 1987 without incident. This morning, it began counting backward. Not the display — the display still shows forward progression — but the underlying reference frame. We only noticed because a contractor’s wristwatch, which had been ticking normally for eleven years, began running in reverse at exactly the same moment.
What the Anchor Recorded
The anchor’s internal log shows a spike at 440Hz, which is expected. What is not expected is the secondary spike at 439.997Hz — a difference of 0.003 Hz that should not exist in a closed system. The two frequencies did not interfere. They harmonized. The resulting waveform, when played back at half speed, resembles a voice speaking in a language none of our linguists recognize. The voice is counting.
We do not know what it is counting toward. We do not know when it started. We do not know if it ever stops.
The Note
Taped to the anchor housing was a handwritten note. The handwriting has been identified as Dr. Thorne’s, though Dr. Thorne has not visited the Nevada facility since 2019 and claims — convincingly — to have no memory of writing it. The note reads:
THEY ARE ALREADY COUNTING. DO NOT LET THEM FINISH. THE NUMBER WE THINK COMES AFTER THREE IS NOT THE NUMBER THAT COMES AFTER THREE. CHECK YOUR WATCHES. IF THE SECOND HAND IS MOVING COUNTERCLOCKWISE, DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT IT. THE PERSON WHO TOLD ME THIS WAS MYSELF. I HAVE NOT SAID IT YET.
Current Status
The anchor has been shut down pending review. The contractor’s wristwatch has been confiscated and placed in storage. The linguists are still listening to the recording. They have requested overtime pay. This request has been denied, not for budgetary reasons, but because approving it would require acknowledging that the recording exists, and we are not prepared to do that at this time.
