[Chronicle fragment, Greek manuscript, recovered from Venetian archive]

…and the city fell as prophecy foretold, on the twenty-ninth day of May in the year of our Lord 1453. Yet among the accounts of the siege, one testimony stands apartโ€”that of Demetrius the Scribe, who survived the initial breach and hid within the Church of the Holy Wisdom for three days.

Demetrius claimed to have witnessed, during the height of the fighting, a group of men who appeared suddenly within the church’s nave. He described them thus:

“They wore garments of a strange cutโ€”trousers that clung to the legs, covered in pockets and fastenings I could not comprehend. Their upper garments were short, leaving their arms bare, and bore images and letters in languages unknown. One carried a small black rectangle that emitted light and showed moving pictures. They spoke in a tongue unlike any I have heard, though one word they repeated: ‘history,’ ‘history,’ as if seeking confirmation of what they already knew.”

Most troubling: Demetrius noted that one of these strangers wore upon his feet coverings bearing a symbolโ€”a swoosh, he called it, like a bird’s flight made stillโ€”and upon his breast the words “JUST DO IT.”

These men vanished as suddenly as they appeared, leaving behind only a small metal object that Demetrius described as “shining like silver but lighter than air, with buttons numbered in a fashion I could not understand.”
