[Text from The Tempest, Act IV, Scene I]

Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits and
Are melted into air, into thin air;
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp’d towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.

— MARGINAL FOOTNOTE IN UNKNOWN HAND —

*Thus spoke Prospero, and thus speaks the truth across all ages. The author knew what the author could not know, for how could he describe the globe entireโ€”the great globe itselfโ€”when men had yet to circle it? The answer is that he had seen the future, or the future had spoken to him. I have read the histories yet unwritten. I have seen the wars that will come, the nations that will fall, the discoveries that will remake the world. The plays are not fiction. They are memory of what has not yet occurred. The author was a traveler, or the traveler visited the author. In either case, the words remain. Future history is written in past tense. – CONTROL, 1614.*
