To my brother Marcus in Rome,

I write to you in haste, though I confess I do not know if haste has any meaning anymore. The mountain has erupted as the soothsayers foretold, and ash falls like snow upon the city. But I must tell you of what I have seen, for I fear no one else will believe it, and I would not have this knowledge lost.

As I fled through the streets toward the harbor, I passed the forum where men gathered in confusion. There I witnessed a thing impossible: a group of children playing with a ball, yet the ball and the children both were frozen—not cold, but stopped, motionless, as if time itself had ceased for them while continuing for the rest of us. The ash fell around them but not upon them. They laughed, but made no sound. They moved, but remained in place.

I touched one child’s shoulder, and she turned to look at me with eyes that held centuries. She spoke a single word in a language I did not know: “Archival.” Then she and her companions faded like morning mist, leaving behind only their ball—a sphere of strange material I had never seen, lighter than leather, bearing markings that read [SYMBOL MATCHES SECTOR 7 GEOMETRY].

The ash buries us now. I have hidden this letter where the heat may preserve it. Look for the objects within the ash layer that do not belong.
